I initially went to see him having been recommended to do so by my GP regarding an Achilles injury and have been seeing him ever since!
I started running in 2012 to improve my fitness. I’d been very overweight in the past and a committed sofa-surfer, but had recently lost a lot of weight. I wanted to continue getting healthier but hated the gym so running seemed like a good choice. Unfortunately, like most runners, I thought that just running was enough and didn’t think about building strength or mobility. Of course, this strategy only lasts so long, and I pulled my Achilles tendon in December 2012. I had difficulty walking for a few weeks, and was in a fair amount of pain. My family and friends would say things like “well.. you are getting older, maybe running isn’t the exercise for you… what about swimming..aerobics..something that’s less hard on the joints?”
Seeing Simon was the start of a process of education and support – I learned why I had hurt myself, what to do to make it better and how to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Of course, this meant I found my new favourite “most hated exercise” – the lunge, but I guess everything can’t be great all the time!!
Simon is great at explaining WHY things go wrong, and then why the exercises he suggests will improve things – good motivation for someone like me.
He has also helped me with my SELF – when things are stressful, he’s got good suggestions about how to relax, how to stay motivated and when to accept that its time to cool off, rebuild and get back to being better. He doesn’t nag (too much) and helps me towards goals that I can set for myself with support and enthusiasm.
In my time with Simon, I have been able to run 5ks without injury, and entered the Manchester 10k – something I NEVER thought I would ever do (I’ve even considered a half-marathon. My friends were shocked.. It hasn’t happened yet, but its on the radar!). I’ve learned loads about exercise and can see myself running for years to come! Thanks Si!!![/fusion_text][/one_full][/fullwidth]
